Sydney Hardtop on the ropes
Council pulls plug on last Indie Aussie Cinema

(Glenbrook, New South Wales Australia- - ) The Blue Mountains city council wants to close the doors for twelve weeks. The owner of the family-owned historic Glenbrook Cinema wants to stay open. Twelve long weeks with no ticket and candy sales seems like something out of a B horror movie. Even scarier, not being able to see a big screen picture show on Saturday night, holding hands with your sweetheart.
Battling entrepreneur Ron Curran has already made most of the repairs. The city council wants more. It's been a roller coaster of a ride for Curran since he opened the doors back in 1968. "The first night we couldn't get the projector started. Luckily, no one showed, so we were okay" Curran remembers fondly. "We're as much a part of this community now as the Koala Bears. They love us. We love them."
The locals do love the place. When the box-office phone rings off the hook as it does most of the time and when the lines stretch down the block, Ron recruits his wife Karen to help take the tickets and daughter Tamara to pop the popcorn. He's chronicled his comical misadventures in the screen trade in his book: A Little Cinema.
With a precious piece of Australian cinema history on the verge of extinction, the faithful have organized the Friends of the Cinema, bent on raising funds and keeping those doors open and the city council at bay. From Down Under to Hollywood they are spreading the word via their web site: www.glenbrookcinema.com.au.
The Glenbrook focuses on family fare like The Incredibles, Finding Neverland, Phantom of the Opera, De Lovely, Hero, Oceans Twelve, Moulin Rouge and The Piano. Babe was Glenbrooks's most popular movie screening ever, back in 1995. The ticket line stretched just about to the horizon.
.What they need now is an old-fashioned Saturday afternoon matinee Raiders of the Lost Ark style movie miracle. Here's hoping they find one.
